Course Objectives:

  1. Understand the terms of "mental health" and "mental illness".
  2. Be aware of the general assumptions, stigma and prejudices about mental health problems.
  3. Recognise some of the signs and symptoms of mental health problems.
  4. Have a basic knowledge of some common mental illnesses including depression, anxiety, SAD, OCD, panic attacks, eating disorders, schizophrenia, and bi-polar disorder.
  5. Understand how it might feel to have a mental health problem
  6. Know how to communicate more effectively with people who have mental health problems.

Disability-awareness

Course Objective 
  1. Have a basic knowledge of a wide-range of disabilities
  1. Understand the Models of disability
  2. Equality Act 2010
  3. Identify disability discrimination
  4. Explain the definition of disability used by the Disability Discrimination Act. (DDA)
  5. Identify the differences between Disabilities & how those disabilities affect people in their day to day lives.
  6. Communicate with people who have Disabilities in the correct manner.
  7. Have an understanding about access issues.

Dyslexia-awareness

Course Objectives:
  1. Understand the term “Dyslexia”
  2. Be aware of the general assumptions, stigma and prejudices about Dyslexia
  3. Recognise some of the signs of Dyslexia and other learning difficulties.
  4. Have a basic knowledge of specific learning disabilities and associated conditions including: Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, Asperger's Syndrome, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Auditory Processing Disorder, Visual Processing Disorder, Irlene syndrome, Visual stress
  5. Understand how it might feel to have a Specific learning disability.
  6. Understand how assistive technology can help with specific learning difficulties.

Deaf-awareness

Course Objectives:
  1. Background to deafness
  2. Types of hearing loss
  3. Access barriers (group exercises) 
  4. Lipreading skills (group exercises)
  5. Communication skills and tips. 
  6. Sign language & finger spelling exercises.
  7. Workplace adjustments
